Speedpaint Week 5

Congratulations on Concept Art Factory for making it to week 5!

And congrats to everybody at SCAD for surviving midterms too. This is the halfway point of the quarter, and I think we're at a great spot.

This week we did our mega mashup challenge, a character in a full environment, with the extended time limit of 3 hours. The discussions we went through to decide the subject were pretty entertaining, lol :D We finally settled on "Futuristic Biotech-driven Aztec city (with or without aliens)".  Thanks again for the great submissions! Also, since this challenge is a cumulative of everything we've learned so far, I'm planning on putting everyone's week 5 piece together for the blog header next week. So if you would like to retouch the painting more before it goes up, DO IT FAST!

Blog problems

Hey guys, just confirming with everyone that the blog is working and fine. I know that it apparently disappeared for a day or so on Sunday (April 24th), and Blogspot displayed the blog as having been removed. After I signed into the club account today to see what was up, the blog miraculously reappeared again. Our URL is the same and our posts are all present. I don't know what happened, but lets just hope it's a one-time glitch and we won't have any more trouble!

Speedpaint Week 4!

Thanks again guys!
This week we did something a little different since the topic was environments. Thanks to everyone who showed up, even though I know that with midterms coming up lots of us are smothered with work!
The theme was "Cheerful 1700s palace airbourne by ballons", with the exact culture and technology of the environment up for everyone to choose on their own.

Also, please note that WE ARE CHANGING MEETING TIMES! Since there are several clubs right before us and we don't really start work until 6:00, we'll just meet at 6 instead, so the meetings should end around 8.

Speed paint week 3

This meetings' turnout was AWESOME! I think all of us who've been working on these challenges from the start are showing loads of improvement, and I can't wait to see what the new members will bring.

For this challenge we did Characters, and the subject was "disgruntled Futuristic Russian hooker" :)
Some mature content ensues, you have been warned.
Thanks to everyone who participated, and again if anybody would like to polish their speedpaint into a portfolio piece, you can still send it in by next Friday to be reposted!

Next week's subject will be Environments, and the week after that we would've reached our five-week cycle. Thus a few members, namely me, Annick, and Lily, were thinking about giving the cycle-closure challenge some extra spice: a 2-hour speed paint of a character in an environment or vehicle with a prop. If that idea sounds cool with everyone, we'll go ahead and change the challenge details.

Speedpaint Challenge 02

Concept Art Factory has officially made it through its first week!!
Thanks for everyone who's supporting us, whether or not you can make it to the club meetings or not--especially to the people who can't make the physical meetings but are still sending in weekly paintings. You guys are awesome.
This week was a bit haphazard as SCAD's Career Fair is on the same day, but still we had many new faces show up, and everyone blew the paint challenge out of the water.
Our subject today was "Creature" and "prehistoric arctic airbourne carnivore".

Also, we've decided to give the sketch challenge a little leeway, since many participants wanted to further polish their pieces during the week. Don't get it wrong, the 90 minute challenge will still be posted here! But should you choose to work on your design some more, you may send it in by the next Friday, and we will post it next to your original 90-minute painting.

Speedpaint challenge 01

We did Vehicles for meeting 1, and by random shoutout (very democratic, yes) we decided the subject would be "medieval African evil racer" :D

Just for future reference, again the way we have organized the speedpaint challenges is:

  • We rotate the subjects of vehicle, creature, character, prop, and environment to form a 5-week cycle. Each week's speedpaint will be a different subject.
  • At each meeting we'll determine (by shoutout or discussion) the time, place, functionality, and personality of the subject.
  • ... and immediately start the challenge! Everyone will have 90 minutes to work on their design.
  • When times is up, we'll have a short informal critique, just of what works well with the subject and what doesn't in each piece. Afterwards, please email all of your designs to conceptartfactory@gmail.com so they can be posted here.

Because we only had about 60 minutes this week, everyone got to take their work home and touch up some more. Smashing job, everyone!

Meeting numero uno!

I declare the first ever meeting of the SCAD concept art club a success!! :D

We got a lot done today, especially for a first meeting, on the first week of a new quarter. We discussed club officer positions, club activities, and even got a speed painting challenge done (Also, obviously, we got our blog up and running!). Thanks to everybody who showed up, and I hope this group will  be a success.

Now for what the blog should be used for:
We have decided that we will post the results of every week's speed painting topics on the blog.
All club officers will have access to the blog and the blog's email account. Anyone who wishes to post industry news, new artists, or new links and such are welcome to! Lets keep everyone informed.
The blog will also be a great way to contact everybody. We have a members list under the title bar, and I'll try to link everybody's name to their galley/art blog if I know of it. I'll also transfer over the link collection from our facebook group.

Again thanks for showing up and being such good sports! We're gonna have some mad fun.

Cheers,
Irene
