Fall Quarter Meeting 10/7/11

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a great summer! It has been a while since the last update but we finally got the meeting up and running again. Woohoo! We meet every Friday after 6pm in the SEQA room 347.

Nick, and I have been discussing how we proceed with the club because it seemed that we were doing mostly digital painting which gave us little time to focus on actual design during our 90 minute challenges. Soooo, we thought it would be helpful if we started on silhouette sketches for a while then progress to speed paints because polished works would be considered final renders but not actual concept art. Concept art is for communicating designs, granted you need technical skills in rendering but a good designer can communicated designs in any medium from cut out paper to paint. So this week we are continuing the silhouette studies before we take them into value studies and finally into a colored digital painting challenge. You can use any medium like photoshop or ink on paper. If you have any questions or suggestions, please email us at conceptartfactory@gmail.com-- We appreciate your input!

So this week, our topic is "Warrior" from any time period you want and any culture. Just make sure the time period you choose is consistent with the other designs you are doing. If you decided to choose 1860s Plains America, then all your designs should reflect that concept. Again you can use any time period and culture so long as it's a warrior. We had 90 minutes to do the challenge and add in tweaks and edits. For silhouettes, you have different approaches. One way is to take a large brush and just block in large shapes altogether. The other is to use gesture lines to create random strokes which create certain shapes which you can then use to develop more shapes like a gestalt. Be sure to have at least 10 character designs when you send it in. Good Luck and Have Fun!
